1st Whitwell Scouts & Guides
Nomination Number 3 – Danielle Hyde (Support Team and Committee Member)

As a member of the 2024 support team I would like to nominate 1st Whitwell Scouts and Guides as a recipient for the fundraising from the 2025 Louise Smalley Walk.
As a group, 1st Whitwell Scouts and Guides has approximately 100 children and young people, supported by over 30 adult volunteers, enrolled into its units of Beavers, Rainbows, Cubs, Brownies, Scouts, Guides and Rangers – and are also in the process of opening a squirrels section to offer scouting activities to an even younger age range.
Within these units a wide variety of activities are put on each week to teach life skills, team work, survival skills, crafts, and mostly importantly, to have fun!
Outside of running the unit sections, the group are heavily involved in the local community and strive to help make Whitwell a fantastic community to live in. Throughout the year they are involved and help with providing a number of village events such as Mayday, Well Dressing, Gala and Bonfire night.
1st Whitwell prides itself on being inclusive and having open doors to any member of the community that would like to join in. However, the scout hut itself has become a barrier to this by being outdated in some areas, meaning that it has become increasingly difficult to provide to people with additional needs and disabilities.
The group are looking to fundraise money to upgrade to accessible toilet facilities, ramp access into the hut, and other improvements to be better equipped to welcome other disabilities such as hearing and visual impairments and those with SEN requirements.
By making these improvements to the hut it would also benefit the wider community by making it an accessible and inclusive space for use by other community groups.
